What is the difference between ese and aquel?

What is the difference between " ese " and "aquel"? I asked spanish people but they dont know how to answer in English...
I hope you will. (please keep it basic). thx.

When refering to distance (in space), aquel should refer to the more distant thing:

ese that one?
no, aquel no, that one (over there)

When refering to a distant time, aquel must be used. Once the time period has been mentioned, ese may be used:

¿te acuerdas de aquella bicicleta que te regalaron cuando cumpliste diez años? Do you remember that bycycle that they bought you when you turned ten? (aquella is used because the bicycle no longer exists, and it is from the distant past)
aquel novio estaba loco that boyfriend was crazy (ese would imply that they are still together)

In some set phrases, aquel is obligatory:

¡qué día aquél/aquel! What a day that was!
¡qué tiempos aquellos/aquéllos! What times they were!

Fill in the blanks with the correct form of aquel or eseAlthough capitalization does not count, spelling does!

Please enter your name

1. ¡qué noche ! (What a night that was!)

2. ¿Cual arbol es? ¿ese? no, . (Which tree is it? that one? no, that one over there.)

3. Me acuerdo de casa que fue destruida en el incendio. (I remember that house tht was destroyed in the fire.)

4.¿Fuiste a fiesta la semana pasada? (did you go to that party last week?)

I made the double mistake of saying es trienta y cinco when refering to my friend's age and everyone burst out laughing. I found out that in Costa Rica, es trienta y cinco means you are crazy.
